Trenton Mayor Jackie Soptic proclaimed May 11-17 as National Salvation Army Week in the city of Trenton, recognizing The Salvation Army’s 147 years of service to area residents.

The proclamation recognizes The Salvation Army for serving the people of Trenton physically, emotionally and spiritually, especially during times of crisis when vulnerable residents may face homelessness, food insecurity, addiction or spiritual weariness.

As part of its ongoing outreach, The Salvation Army Service Extension Center of Chillicothe, which serves Grundy and Livingston counties, is also preparing several community activities and programs in the coming weeks.

Among those activities is a National Donut Day celebration planned for June 3-5. The Salvation Army will partner with the Jewett Norris Library and the Children’s Summer Reading Program on June 3 to read “Dino’s Love Donuts” by Ben Okon, with activities and donuts for children to enjoy. On June 4, The Salvation Army will join Trenton R-IX Summer School to make donuts and take part in a “JOYful,” jelly-filled activity. On June 5, fresh donuts will be served to the community from The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Canteen in Chillicothe.

The donut celebration connects to The Salvation Army’s long history of service. During World War I, Salvation Army volunteers known as “Donut Lassies” served soldiers in France by frying donuts and providing supplies near the front lines. National Donut Day was established in 1938 to honor that legacy and support those in need.

The Salvation Army is also promoting 2026 summer camp opportunities through Camp Mihaska. Camp activities include hiking, ropes course challenges, fishing, basketball, volleyball, tennis, indoor games, arts and crafts, music, Bible study, swimming and other recreational opportunities. Camp sessions include older adult camp, outdoor camps, sports camps, music and creative arts camp, family camp, community camps, a music conservatory and Moonbeam Camp for younger children.

Another local effort is a fan drive to help individuals in the community who are in need. Donations may be made at Ace Westlake Hardware through monetary donations or by rounding up purchases. All donations will go toward providing fans for individuals in need, with fans to be distributed during the last week of June.

According to the proclamation, The Salvation Army invites Trenton residents to show love to their neighbors and help the organization continue providing aid to those who need it most.

Soptic encouraged citizens to join together and give back to the community in ways that are personally meaningful.
