Trenton turned a tie game into a comfortable lead with five runs in the sixth inning Tuesday, Sept. 15, defeating Maysville 7-2 behind a 16-hit performance and 12 strikeouts from Emma Welch.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the first inning to take an early lead, but Maysville gradually worked its way back. The Wolverines scored once in the third and again in the fifth, drawing even at 2-2 while keeping Trenton scoreless through the middle innings.

That changed in the bottom of the sixth, when the Bulldogs pushed across five runs to regain control. Trenton then held Maysville scoreless in the seventh to secure the victory.

Welch provided much of the Bulldogs’ extra-base power, going 3-for-3 with two triples and a double. She drove in two runs, scored twice, drew a walk and stole two bases.

Sydney Blackburn led Trenton in hits with a 4-for-4 performance that included a double and an RBI. Betsy Price and Claire Woodard added two hits apiece, with Price scoring twice and driving in a run.

Every player in Trenton’s batting lineup recorded at least one hit. Kimberly Clark, Makayla Mejia, Morgan Smith, Lucy Price and Lillian Ortega each contributed one. Lucy doubled and scored while Clark added a run and an RBI. Mejia drove in a run and recorded both a sacrifice and a sacrifice fly.

The Bulldogs also kept pressure on Maysville on the bases, finishing with eight steals. Clark led with three, followed by Welch with two. Betsy, Smith and Woodard each stole one.

In the circle, Welch allowed two earned runs on eight hits and one walk over seven innings. Woodard pitched one-third of an inning without allowing a hit or run and was credited with the win.

Trenton finished without an error and struck out just once at the plate. Maysville committed two errors and finished with eight hits.

The Bulldogs record is now 5-6. They are scheduled to face Gallatin Thursday, Sept. 17, followed by Lawson Monday, Sept. 21.
