The college is celebrating a historic milestone as student‑athlete Addi Henke becomes only the second student in college history to complete the rigorous nursing program while actively competing in intercollegiate athletics.

“Henke, a standout member of the women’s basketball team, has demonstrated exceptional dedication, resilience, and academic excellence in achieving this remarkable accomplishment,” reads a college release about her achievement.

For more than 20 years, longtime faculty member Sarah Bird has served NCMC in multiple capacities, including faculty athletic representative.

“Supporting students like Addi is one of the true joys of my work,” she said.

Henke’s achievement reflects not only her personal commitment, but also the strong partnership between the NCMC Women’s Basketball Program and the Nursing Department, reads a college release.

“What an accomplishment for Addi and a testament to both our women’s basketball program and our nursing program,” Bird added. “I am incredibly proud of how these programs worked together to help her achieve her goals.”

Shanna Thomas, LPN program coordinator and nursing instructor, also praised Henke’s dedication.

“Balancing the responsibilities of a student athlete while completing a rigorous nursing program speaks volumes about Addi’s work ethic, determination and character. Her ability to remain committed to her team while also prioritizing her education demonstrates her strong sense of responsibility to her future and her community,” said Thomas.

It takes a motivated, passionate, and resilient student to succeed in both roles, and Addi exemplifies these qualities every day, added Thomas.

“I have no doubt that she will become an exceptional nurse who goes above and beyond for her patients, just as she does for her teammates and classmates,” said the LPN program coordinator.
