Head Start Applications Open

North Central Missouri College’s Green Hills Head Start program is accepting applications for the 2026-27 school year.

Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Green Hills Head Start serves families in nine counties, including Grundy and Linn. The grant is awarded to North Central Missouri College to provide services for pregnant women and children from birth to age 5 through center-based and home-based options.

Pre-kindergarten center locations are in Bethany, Brookfield, Milan and Trenton. Infant, toddler and pre-kindergarten centers are located in Chillicothe and Unionville. Home visitors serve families throughout the nine-county area with weekly 90-minute visits and playgroups twice a month. All sites operate four days a week.

The program’s aim is to empower families to become more self-sufficient, trauma-informed and to create positive role models in the home for children and communities.

Enrollment selection follows federal regulations and is based on a child’s age and the household income. Families may also qualify if they are homeless, receive SNAP or SSI benefits, or if the child is in foster care, kinship care or is a ward of the state. Children with documented disabilities are also prioritized for services.

Once selected, children and their families are eligible for a range of services offered by the program.

Nutritional services include healthy breakfasts, lunches and snacks that meet federal guidelines. Families also receive education on healthy eating habits and meal planning.

Health services include developmental screenings, vision and hearing tests and referrals for medical or dental care when needed. Staff members work with families to help children stay up to date on immunizations and routine check-ups.

“By addressing health needs early, Head Start helps prevent issues that could interfere with learning and development,” reads a program release.

Family engagement is a core component of the program. Parents are encouraged to take part in classroom activities, workshops and decision-making committees. Families are also offered support services such as parenting education, job training referrals and help with setting personal or educational goals.

Head Start also places a strong emphasis on social and emotional well-being.

“Teachers and specialists help children learn to manage emotions, build relationships and develop self-regulation skills. When needed, mental health professionals may work with families and staff to address behavioral or emotional concerns,” reads the release.

Disability services are also available to ensure children receive appropriate support. Programs collaborate with specialists to provide individualized education plans and therapy services.
