Wright Memorial Program Highlights Mental Health Awareness Month
Wright Memorial Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions is recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month in May by embracing this year’s theme, “More Good Days, Together.”
“Mental health matters at every stage of life, and the Senior Life Solutions team is committed to supporting older adults and caregivers in rural communities with compassionate, meaningful care,” reads an organizational release.
Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to start conversations, reduce stigma and connect people with support. Senior Life Solutions is highlighting the unique mental health needs of older adults and encouraging the community to take small steps that can lead to more good days together.
Those steps include challenging misconceptions, starting conversations, supporting caregivers, fostering connection and encouraging people to seek help.
“Depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges are not a normal part of aging. They are common, treatable and deserving of care. A simple check-in can go a long way, and talking openly about mental health can help people feel seen, supported and less alone,” reads the release.
Caregivers also play an essential role in the well-being of older adults, and Senior Life Solutions encourages caregivers to care for their own mental health as well. “Social connection can make a meaningful difference in emotional well-being, and reaching out to a friend, neighbor or loved one can brighten someone’s day,” the release states.
Knowing when to ask for help is a sign of strength, and early support can make recovery and coping easier.
“Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us that even small actions can make a meaningful impact,” Shelby Todd, Wright Memorial Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions program director, said. “When we check in on one another, listen without judgment, and connect people to support, we help create more good days for older adults, caregivers, and families across our community.”
Senior Life Solutions invites the community to support mental wellness this month by learning the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety in older adults, reaching out to an older adult or caregiver with a call, visit or message, sharing mental health resources, encouraging open conversations and exploring the services and support available through the program.
“Those who are taking steps to improve their mental health but still feel stuck, or who are not sure where to begin, are encouraged to connect with a health care provider,” reads the release.
Senior Life Solutions is an outpatient program designed to meet the unique needs of older adults experiencing depression and/or anxiety related to life changes often associated with aging or a chronic diagnosis.
