Efforts to help area residents become more involved in growing, using and selling sustainable food sources were the focus of a program presented to the Trenton Rotary Club during its meeting Thursday, Jan. 15, at the BTC Bank community room.
Daniel Gott presided over the meeting. Joe MacDonald gave the prayer and served as program chairman, and Chris Hoffman acted as sergeant at arms.
The program was presented by Ashlen Busick, who has been involved with the Community Food Garden since 2014. Busick spoke about the “Grow for Grundy” project, an initiative designed to promote access to healthy food options throughout Grundy County.
Busick shared statistics illustrating challenges many local residents face when trying to obtain nutritious foods, including limited access and lack of education about growing and preparing fresh produce. She explained that the Grow for Grundy project works to remove those barriers by providing educational opportunities and hands-on experiences that empower individuals and families to take an active role in their own food sources.
Education, Busick said, is a critical part of encouraging healthier food use. Sharing information, exchanging ideas and building community connections all play an important role in creating long-term change. She emphasized that community support and participation are essential to the success of the project.
As part of the ongoing effort, Busick announced an upcoming program titled “Winter Garden Party,” which will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at The Space. The event is open to the public and will offer information on healthy food sources for both beginners and those with experience growing their own food. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn new skills, ask questions and connect with others who share an interest in local and sustainable food.
The next meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club will be held Thursday, Jan. 22. The program will be presented by Rocky Dunkin, who will share information about the local youth boxing club. Joe MacDonald will serve as program chairman.
