Michelle Vandevender was elected as Grundy County circuit clerk and ex officio recorder of deeds Tuesday, Aug. 4, defeating Amanda Spencer in the county’s only contested local race.

Uncertified results from the Aug. 4 election showed Vandevender receiving 1,072 votes, or 52.6%, while Spencer received 964 votes, or 47.4%. The candidates were separated by 108 votes.

“My first reaction was overwhelming gratitude, and I hugged my family super tight,” Vandevender said. “I thought about everyone who believed in me, stood beside me and placed their trust in me. It was a humbling moment that I’ll never forget, and it immediately reminded me of the responsibility that comes with serving this community.”

Vandevender said the victory represented more than securing the vote.

“Winning isn’t about the title — it’s about earning the trust of the people of Grundy County,” Vandevender said. “To me, it’s an opportunity to serve with integrity, lead with compassion and work every day to strengthen our office and move our county forward.”

Vandevender received the most votes at the Grundy County Courthouse, First Christian Church, Grundy County Health Department, Laredo, Galt and Spickard polling locations. Spencer carried the First Baptist Church and Edinburg precincts as well as absentee voting, according to uncertified returns.

The circuit clerk’s office maintains court records, processes filings and provides administrative support for the circuit court. As ex officio recorder of deeds, the office also maintains property deeds, marriage licenses and other permanent county records.

Grundy County reported voter turnout of approximately 39.3%.

Several other candidates for Grundy County offices ran unopposed in the primary. Phillip Ray sought another term as presiding commissioner, Courtney Campbell ran for county clerk and Kelly Puckett ran for prosecuting attorney.
