Education legislation topic of retired teachers meeting
The Grundy/Mercer Unit of Retired Teachers and School Personnel discussed state legislation affecting Missouri public schools during its April 15 meeting.
The discussion focused on House Bill 3, the appropriations bill that allocates state revenues for elementary, secondary and higher education. The bill has been passed and delivered to the governor for his signature. The legislation also will affect funding for some entities, including public libraries.
Members also discussed House Joint Resolutions 173 and 174, dealing with the proposed elimination of the state income tax. At the time of the meeting, the issue was still being debated. Since then, it has been truly agreed to and finally passed and delivered to the secretary of state to be placed on the ballot for voters to decide.
Ron Hurst, chairman of the Protective Services Committee, encouraged members to be vigilant about phone and computer scams. He also reported that a decision will be made at the May meeting on the recipient of the unit’s scholarship, which will be awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a degree in teaching.
Ruth Ann Shipps reported that, in addition to monetary donations supporting education, hunger relief and other causes, members donated 545 hours of volunteer work during the month.
Members also plan to participate in “High-Five Friday” on May 15 to welcome students to school that morning at Rissler Elementary School.
The next meeting will be May 20 at Dino’s Diner in Trenton. Breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the meeting at 9 a.m. Becky Cochran, legislative chair, announced that Daniel Gott, superintendent of the Trenton R-IX School District, will present the program and discuss how recently passed legislation could affect the school system.
Any retired teacher or school personnel interested in more information or joining the group may contact Larry Dannar, unit president, at (660) 635-0195.
