Rotary Club Talks Football

Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach and former MU Tigers football assistant coach Andy Hill presented the program at the Thursday, Nov. 20 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room. Daniel Gott presided at the business meeting, Dan Wilford gave the prayer and Jeff Crowley was the sergeant at arms.

Program chairman Bruce Constant thanked member Doug Tye for helping to arrange the program, then introduced Hill, who told about his experiences with both the Chiefs and the Tigers. Hill played football at MU for four years and, after a four-year stint as coach at Hutchinson, KS, Community College, spent 24 years coaching at MU. He then was hired as a special teams assistant coach by the Chiefs, where he worked for five years before retiring this past March.

Hill, a Trenton native, was on the coaching staff in Kansas City for two of the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl wins and told about the team’s weekly game preparations, noting that Head Coach Andy Reid is one of the most regimented coaches he has worked with. He talked about how the NFL salary cap makes it hard to keep good players and how Chiefs work around the salary cap restrictions. He also showed replicas of two of the Super Bowl trophies, which he said were given to the assistant coaches by Coach Reid, and showed his two Super Bowl rings. He also shared stories from his days as a coach at MU, including events surrounding his interview with then-MU Coach Larry Smith to join the Tiger coaching staff.

During the business meeting, members were reminded about the club Christmas Party, which will be held on Dec. 18. Members are to contact Kim Washburn no later than Dec. 4 to make reservations to attend.

There will be no meeting on Nov. 27, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The program for the Dec. 4 meeting will be Reid Johnson and Anna Persell from Crowder State Park. Melissa King is the program chairman.
