The Grundy County Commission discussed bridge funding, FEMA projects, equipment needs and several other county matters during its meeting last week.

Shannon Howe reported that a new call for Missouri Department of Transportation Off-System Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation (BRO) funding had been released. He said the county could continue using its list of potential projects developed several months ago and submit its top two bridge projects if commissioners wanted to maintain those priorities.

Howe also reviewed the county’s available soft-match funding and reported there should be enough to cover the BRO projects if they are selected for funding.

Commissioners also discussed budgeting for a cost-share project, with the county’s portion estimated at approximately $1.1 million.

Road and bridge employee Jason Hunter reported the department will need to purchase a larger truck. He also updated commissioners on FEMA-related work, reporting that the bridge projects have been completed while work continues on the remaining projects.

Matt Walker and Bethany Kothman presented their weekly operations report. They reported obtaining an automated weather-monitoring tool designed to check conditions daily and provide information about upcoming weather. Walker said he is interested in seeing how the system performs during severe weather.

Walker also reported that a public hearing will be held regarding the submission of a grant application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program for funding assistance to purchase office information technology equipment. The hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 1.

Emergency Management Director Glen Briggs met with commissioners to discuss a FEMA project. Paperwork associated with the project must be completed and submitted by Sept. 2.
