James Porter III from St. Louis, MO, has been selected as North Central Missouri College’s Outstanding Student for February. James is pursuing an AA degree and plans to graduate in May. After graduating from NCMC, James plans to attend a four-year university, major in finance, and continue to play collegiate basketball.
At NCMC, James is an active member of Student Support Services and an athlete on the Pirates men’s basketball team. James said, “What I like most about NCMC is the hometown, small‑town feel. Everyone is connected, and everyone shows up for you. I appreciate how the community supports us at games. People recognize us around town and encourage us. I really value the connection with the community and the family atmosphere.”
James’ favorite class so far has been Accounting with Instructor Ronda Copple. He said, “Instructor Copple does a great job of helping you understand the material. She never makes you feel behind, and she’s just a great instructor overall. I also enjoy the class because it relates to my major.”
He also spoke highly of Instructor Sarah Bird, adding, “Mrs. Bird is always helping you, both inside and outside the classroom. We always have a lot going on, and both Instructor Copple and Instructor Bird understand that and are always looking for ways to support us.”
James continued, “I chose NCMC to play basketball, and I liked the small-town feel. When I arrived, everyone in the community was so nice and welcoming. It’s a great place to be, and Coach E is not only a good coach but also a good person.”
Each month, a student is nominated by a faculty or staff member to be featured as an Outstanding Student based on their dedication to educational success, attitude toward learning, and hard work in their field and activities.
