What is the Lion’s Club?

Submitted

Chartered in 1938, the Trenton Lions Club became part of Lions Clubs International, which was founded in 1917 in Chicago. In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions Clubs International to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.”

Lions International has since added hearing-impaired, speech-impaired, hunger, diabetes awareness, youth and childhood cancer to their service areas. The local Club has concentrated on sight conservation and youth activities. Many years ago, Lions assisted in providing cataract surgery for an individual and have provided eyeglasses for deserving youth since their inception. Lions Clubs award scholarships each year and sponsor local students to attend Boys and Girls State. If a local student or youth organization needs assistance, the Trenton Lions Club is ready to step up to the plate.

Local membership peaked at approximately 60 in the 1970s. Current membership stands at 17. Additional information, as well as contact information, may be found on the Club’s Facebook page, “Trenton, MO Lions Club.”
