Vel Westbrook, Nursing Skills Lab Supervisor at North Central Missouri College (NCMC), has been named the recipient of the Innovation Award by the Missouri Community College Association (MCCA). This prestigious statewide award recognizes individuals or teams who develop creative, effective solutions that enhance student learning and improve college operations through innovative practices and technology. Vel was one of nine finalists across Missouri and received the award during the annual MCCA Convention in St. Charles, MO.
Her selection was based on her groundbreaking approach to nursing education. Vel seamlessly integrates advanced simulation technology with hands-on learning experiences, ensuring students are fully prepared for real-world healthcare challenges. By tailoring each simulation to reflect authentic clinical scenarios, she fosters critical thinking, practical skills, and confidence, qualities essential for future nurses. Vel’s commitment to student success makes her an invaluable mentor and leader in nursing education.
NCMC President Dr. Lenny Klaver praised Vel’s contributions, stating:
“We are so fortunate to have creative and innovative faculty like Vel, who provide our students with uncommon attention and accessible, hands-on learning opportunities that prepare them for real-world success. We are proud of Vel and the lasting impact she makes on our nursing programs.”
