Celebrating Value, Talent Across Missouri
By Vivek Malek
Missouri State Treasurer
Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the contributions Americans with disabilities make in our workplaces and communities. This year, that recognition carries additional meaning as our nation celebrates its 250th birthday.
The 2026 theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” reminds us that Americans with disabilities have been part of our nation’s story from the beginning. For generations, they have worked, created businesses, served their communities and helped build the country we know today.
That legacy continues across Missouri. Our state is stronger when every Missourian has the opportunity to use his or her talents, pursue meaningful work and build greater financial independence. Employers also benefit when they recognize the abilities and perspectives that people with disabilities bring to the workplace.
As state treasurer, one way I am proud to support this goal is through MO ABLE. Established in 2017, the program provides eligible Missourians with disabilities a way to save and invest money while maintaining access to important means-tested benefits such as Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid.
MO ABLE recently marked a record year. In 2025, the program added nearly 1,400 active accounts and more than $15 million in assets, making it the strongest year in the program’s history. These numbers represent more Missourians with disabilities and their families saving, investing and planning for the future.
MO ABLE funds can be used for qualified disability expenses ranging from education and housing to transportation, health care and assistive technology. This flexibility can help individuals and families pursue greater financial security and independence.
National Disability Employment Awareness Month reminds us that opportunity extends beyond simply getting a job. It means giving people the chance to develop their abilities, contribute to their communities and pursue their own goals.
As America marks 250 years, we have an opportunity to recognize all those who have contributed to our nation’s success and those who will shape its future. This October, I encourage Missourians to join me in celebrating the value, talent and contributions of people with disabilities across our state.
