High School Sports Topic of Rotary Meeting

Trenton High School fall sports were the topic of a program presented at the Thursday, Oct. 8 meeting of the Trenton Rotary Club, held at the BTC Bank community room.

High School Activities Director Chris Weaver told the group about sports programs overall, which, this year, has 17 girls playing softball, 18 girls playing volleyball and 28 boys playing football. There are 10 cheerleaders.

He then introduced THS Girls Golf Coach Travis Mullenix, who said the team recently completed its season in the district tournament. There were eight team members this year (three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen) with the team finishing with a 7-2 dual record. Kali McCall earned a medal at the conference golf meet and missed qualifying for state by two strokes.

The next speaker was Luke Lewis, who coaches girls tennis. There are 11 girls on the team, including two seniors. District play is this week and Lewis noted the team continues to see improvement in each match.

Cross Country coach Chris Parks has 10 boys and girls on the team this season, which is the first time for this sport since the early 1980s. The boys team recently won the conference tournament while the girls placed second. Trenton had the top three individual finishers in the boys competition. The district tournament will be on Oct. 31.

Girls softball coach Madi Stillwell has 20 girls on the team this season and had a record of 11-10 as of Oct. 8. The team has won both the Marshall and LaPlata tournaments, with the district tournament to be held this week in Brookfield.

Girls volleyball coach Brad Ewald has 23 members on his squad, including 11 freshmen, and had a 5-17-4 record as of Oct. 8. He said the team has been involved in several close matches and continues to improve. The district tournament will be held later this month.

Football coach Scott Stephens returned to Trenton after nine years at Brookfield. The team has 35 members, including 13 seniors. He said the team continues to show improvement each week and works hard.
