Trenton finished with twice as many hits as Brookfield but could not turn that advantage into runs Tuesday, Sept. 8, falling 7–0 in varsity softball action.

The Bulldogs collected six hits to Brookfield’s three, but six Trenton errors proved costly. Five of Brookfield’s seven runs were unearned, and a pair of three-run innings gave Brookfield the separation it needed.

Brookfield scored once in the first inning, and the margin remained 1–0 through the third. Three runs in the fourth extended the lead to 4–0 before another three-run inning in the fifth completed the scoring. Trenton held Brookfield scoreless over the final two innings but could not close the gap.

Emma Welch pitched all seven innings for the Bulldogs, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out eight. She was charged with two earned runs and threw 66 strikes among her 109 pitches.

Welch also led Trenton at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Her double was the Bulldogs’ only extra-base hit, and she added a stolen base.

Makayla Mejia, S. Blackburn, Betsy Price and Claire Woodard each contributed a single. Mejia also recorded a sacrifice. Trenton drew two walks and left six runners on base.

Brookfield finished without an error and received a complete-game shutout from its pitcher, who struck out 11 and walked two. The Bulldogs put the ball in play often enough to hold the edge in hits, but Brookfield kept them off the scoreboard through all seven innings.

Trenton is scheduled to travel to Princeton and Putnam County before they play at the Benton Tournament on the 12th.
