Yard of the Month

When walking through Trenton, there are many places that catch the eye, whether they have pretty flowers, seasonal decorations, or well-maintained lawns, there is a lot to appreciate. In light of this, every month the Grand River Garden Club picks one yard and one business to highlight and show off to Trenton, This month the Grand River Garden Club announced that the Yard of the Month for October goes to Mary Ritko and the Business Beautification Award goes to The Main Street Mercantile.

“I was totally surprised because, you know, it’s at the end of the season, and a lot of my stuff is starting to look like it’s the end of the season. But I was honored that they awarded it to me,” Mary said.

Gardening has always been a passion for Mary. “I enjoy working out in the yard. When I was younger, I didn’t mind working in a garden, but the garden days are over,” Now, she spends a little time most days tending to her yard, though she said, “I don’t work quite the same as I did when I was younger. I have to work a little while, then sit a while.”

One of the unique features of Mary’s yard is her collection of gazing balls. She’s also proud of her hibiscus plants, which she says remind her of the tropics whenever they bloom.

Shawna from the Main Street Mercantile said that she was grateful to receive the beautification award. “We really take pride in providing a welcoming atmosphere for our community, inside the shop and out.” She further said, “The award recognizes the work we put in to make our shop a truly special place.”

Mary and Shawnas dedication reminds us that a little extra effort can make a big difference in how our town looks and feels. Congratulations again to this month’s winners.
